From The Publisher:

For over two thousand years we looked to the Bible for wisdom, solace, and spiritual support.  The Patriarchs knew a thing or two.  They left us poetry, history, and religious instruction.  They also knew something about physical sustenance.

The diet of the ancients was healthful, and, considering the times, they were reasonably healthy.  They chose from an amazing array of unadulterated ingredients, locally grown and fresh, consumed in the sweet open air.  Holy Land farmers harvested a large variety of vegetables and fruits; their diet was high in fiber, minerals, and vitamins.  Bread was made from wheat flour, both unleavened and yeast risen, also sour-dough bread from wheat flour alone or mixed with other grains.  It was truly the "staff of life". With the widespread concern about good health, we may discover that God's holy mountain isn't such a stretch after all- it might only amount to a "hill of beans".

We have come a long way.  Our microwave ovens and computer-like stoves have brought us indoors and given us a taste for speed and efficiency.  Yet, the ancients developed ideas that show genius and inspiration.  Their houses were designed around central courtyards so cooking in that warm climate could be accomplished out-of-doors; their ovens were built with fire doors and flues enabling the oven temperature to be regulated.  We have continued to make improvements, and it can be said that we stood on their shoulders.  At the same time, we can take a moment to look backward respectfully at what will never change: family, social relationships, the cycle of life, and values without beginning or end.  Long life, peace, a tree to sit under, a comfortable bed and a fully belly are just as vital today as they were in the time of the Patriarchs.

In Cooking With The Ancients we will attempt to eat what they ate.  Not completely, certainly not forever.  Bt for a short time and special occasions.  To create a Bible Dinner for our family and guests, entertaining strictly from the Book.  Ultimately, it is one more thread in the tapestry that we choose to examine, unraveling it from our earlies roots, finding continuity, tradition, folklore.  It is basic, it feeds us.  And it's fun.
