| From The Publisher: The South African Illustrated Cookbook is a compilation of recipes dear to South Africans from all walks of life and traditiona. It includes Xhasa, Cape Malay, Zulu, English, Indian, Afrikaans, Portuguese and new South African dishes. Illustrator Lehla Eldridge has captured various landmarks- both formal and informal- around South Africa to accompany these local recipes that she has garnered from cooks around the country. Her watercolour illustrations are whimsical, humerous and charming, yet perceptive of the country's rich and varied influences. LEHLA ELDRIDGE was born in England and has worked as an actress, illustrator and waitress, amongst others. Having trained as an actress in London at The Guildhall School, she was awarded a scholarship in 1995 from Twentieth Centrury Fox to work with various theatre companies around South Africe, and has taken a theatre show to the International Theatre Festival in India. As a cook Lehla has spent a significant part of her life in and around kitchens, starting at the age of 14 in a pub kitchen, moving on to London cafes and catering at her father's summer art schools in Italy, where she learned much about Italian cooking. She has also mastered the art of cooking for large numbers, taught to her by her mother. The South African Illustrated Cookbook is Lehla Eldridge's first book and she currently lives in Cape Town. |
